Shortly after the passage of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act with a huge bipartisan vote in congress and after Senator Kennedy had left Washington because of his health, I was driving through rural Kentucky [and] my cell phone rang -- I almost didn't pick it up, but I picked it up and on the other line was Senator Kennedy who said, "Bridge, remember my brother talked about passing a torch to a new generation". Bridge: "Yes, I was only three at the time, but I remembered later." Kennedy: "Well, we really blow-torched this thing didn't we." And laughed this booming laugh which I will never forget of a man who had done so much in life that he did not fear death.

Civic Enterprises and the National Service-Learning Partnership organized an action forum at the College of William and Mary. Over 30 service-learning policy leaders and practitioners came together for a strategy session in which they crafted a vision for making service-learning an integral part of every young person's education. The event included a public forum for students, faculty, and community members, highlighting the results from the strategy session and soliciting input from the broader audience. Mary McNaught traveled with Malaria No More to Mali, Africa for an integrated health campaign. This December, Malaria No More is distributing 165,000 bed nets in Mali, joining the Measles Initiative and other partner organizations in an integrated measles-malaria campaign that will distribute a total of $2.1 million nets. Children under the age of five will receive bed nets, a measles vaccine, polio vaccine, and Vitamin A supplements. By the end of this campaign, all children in Mali under the age of five and their families will have received an insecticide-treated net.

Their presentation discussed the state of current efforts on malaria around the world and a recent bed net distribution and health campaign in Madagascar. John Bridgeland and Stu Wulsin traveled to Madagascar with Malaria No More to participate in the National Launch of Mother and Child Health Week. To be held bi-annually, the campaign delivered Vitamin A supplements, deworming tablets, Measles vaccinations, and insecticide-treated bed nets to approximately 80-90% of children and pregnant and postpartum women. Malaria No More contributed 110,000 LLINs in partnership with Sumitomo, and contributed significant financial support to both UNICEF for distribution and logistics and to the American Red Cross for its follow-up "Hang-Up Keep-Up" campaign.
